About me

My name is Bartosz Paluch. I come from a small town in Poland called ElblÄ…g, which means I can speak two languages. My family and I moved to the UK in 2006. We went back and forth between Poland and England for a few years, from 2006 to 2016. After 2016, we stopped going back home as often.
When it comes to my work, I consider myself a perfectionist. I aim to ensure that every cut, every brushstroke, and every screw is as perfect as possible. I do my best to avoid making mistakes, and when they do arise, I can adapt easily.
I am currently in my first year of study at Rose Bruford College. As much as I enjoy personal projects, I wanted to work in an industry where I can contribute to something greater than myself. I mainly enjoy and excel in carpentry and welding, but I am also a skilled prop maker and scenic painter.
During my childhood in Poland, I loved building makeshift "bases" using materials my friends and I scavenged from local construction sites, which sparked a lifelong passion for hands-on creation.
Growing up, I have always been interested in history and art. I have spent a lot of my artistic career focusing on bringing the two together, so that information can be digested visually rather than having to be read. My family has a tragic history, from the Nazi occupation of Poland to communist and post-communist Poland; I do my best to use this as fuel for my work.

Sustainability and being mindful of waste have been part of who I am since childhood. I learned this mindset from my mother and grandmother, who passed it down through everyday habits and values. Growing up with their influence, I also came to appreciate the broader cultural roots of this attitude. In 1970s Communist Poland, the country experienced its first major wave of ecological awareness, and it was during this time that the phrase “szanuj zieleÅ„” (meaning “respect greenery”) was born.
Because of this, being sustainable feels like a natrual priority to me, and something that must be maintained for the greater good.

How
I
during
my
practice?

During my practice, I try to stay sustainable by reusing old sets and flats for current and future projects, using fabric handed down from other departments, and sourcing props and materials second-hand to give them a second life.
Where possible, I use water-based paints and avoid harsh chemicals or anything that cannot be disposed of easily. I also avoid using PVA, glitter, or single-use plastics—unless a task requires it, such as using a plastic cup to mix expanding foam.
Furthermore, I take the time to work with caution to avoid accidentally ruining materials. For example, by ensuring I don't drill a hole at the wrong angle, I ensure the wood remains reusable. A few extra seconds of care often saves a lot of time and reduces material costs for my course. Working this way makes me more efficient, as I do not have to spend time correcting mistakes.
